In 2029, Major Motoko Kusanagi leads a field team in Public Security Section 9, a counter-cyberterrorism unit whose operatives carry full prosthetic bodies and networked cyberbrains. The squad hunts the Puppet Master, a hacker who breaks into people's cyberbrains and rewrites their memories, leaving them to commit crimes they never chose. Alongside Batou and Togusa, Kusanagi tracks the case across a sweltering port city while weighing how much of her is still her own when body and memory can both be manufactured.
